Your Church Is More Trusted Than You Think
New research from Barna shows people trust small churches more than almost any other Christian institution (and far more than megachurches or celebrity pastors).
Barna's latest trust index asked U.S. adults how much they trust a range of institutions and leaders. Small churches scored 61 out of 100, outpacing Christian churches overall (57) and beating megachurches by 25 points (36). Christian pastors scored 55, well ahead of celebrity pastors at 30. Trust in nearly every Christian category ticked upward since 2024, even as broader trust in American institutions continues to slide. Researchers point to one clear driver: proximity. People trust what they can know personally, and that favors small and local every time.
People are determining whether your church is a place worth trusting with their lives. Your size may be your biggest advantage: the intimacy of knowing people by name and life circumstance is something larger churches spend enormous effort trying to manufacture, and you likely already have it.
Three ways to build on that trust this week:
Audit your visibility for authenticity. Look at your website and social presence. Do these reflect the real relationships happening in your church, or do they read like a brochure? Trust grows from being known accurately.
Make "small" part of your invitation. Instead of downplaying your size, name it as a strength: "We're small enough to actually know your name." That's a promise larger churches can't make.
Prioritize one relational touchpoint this week. A phone call to a struggling member, a personal note to a new visitor: these ordinary moments build trust far more than any program.

Reaching New Movers Is a Trust Opportunity, Not Just an Outreach Tactic | Outreach, Inc.
Families relocating to a new community are often navigating major life changes, whether that’s a new job, a new season, or a fresh start, making them unusually open to genuine connection. Personal invitations, welcome packets, and simple community events are far more effective than polished advertising at earning early trust with this group.
This week: Ask your greeters or connection team to build a short list of new neighbors this month, and pair each name with a personal note or visit rather than a mailer alone.
